The beautiful Strawberry Plains plantation house was built in 1851 by Ebenezer Nelms Davis on land he had purchased in 1836. It was constructed of red clay bricks fired on the property and patterned on the lines of the popular Greek revival style of architecture.
The home was the victim of numerous raids during the Civil War and was eventually burned by the Union army leaving mostly a brick shell. The ruins were made habitable by the Davis family who continued to live within the damaged structure for almost one hundred years until the mid 1960’s when the house was completely and lovingly restored by Davis’ descendent Margaret Finley Shackelford.

Margaret, who had no children, and her sister Ruth, who never married, had made plans early on to bequeath the restored home and over 2,500 acres to the Audubon Society as a living memorial to their parents, Thomas and Ruth Finley. Their wishes became a reality in 1998 with the establishment of the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center with more than 200 species of birds and extensive gardens filled with native plants. Truly a testament of two sisters’ generosity, love of nature and foresight.
