Walter Place

This stately home was built in 1848 by Virginia native Dr. Phillip Patrick Burton who chose a style known as Middle Virginia for the edifice. Dr. Burton was to experience something during the home’s construction that was almost unheard of in his day – his wife Mary divorced him before the place was completed. She and her children eventually moved into the finished home amid a swirling scandal that unphased the headstrong Mary.

The famous Sam Houston was a frequent visitor to the home being an old friend of the family sharing a Virginia connection. A prized possession of the house is the guest bed used by Houston.

The fine old place and its original dependencies are intact into the 21st century and have been meticulously restored by owner David Person.

...with Mrs. Mary Burton Tyson as your hostess.  She is a very modern and headstrong woman, quite like her grandmother before her.  She has recently remarried at 57 years old a man less than half her age at 27 years old and local mouths are gasping!  Mrs. Tyson finds it all very amusing but is much more interested in the town's plans for activities throughout the year in celebration of its centennial.
