This picturesque structure was built in 1858 by planter William Henry Coxe as his "in town" residence having already built a palatial home on his plantation called Galena. It is of Gothic Revival style and was based on the drawings of noted 19th century architect Samuel Sloan.
During the Civil War this house was commandeered by Union General Ulysses S. Grant for a period and used as his personal headquarters. The General and his wife Julia entertained here with a Christmas day dinner in December of 1862, an event recalled by Grant in his famous memoirs.

The property is fronted by a magnificent iron fence installed by the Coxe family and is identical to one at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The home and extensive grounds have recently undergone a historically accurate restoration by owners Joe and Kathy Overstreet. It remains one of the top architectural prizes in a town famous for its collection of Victorian architecture.

...With Miss Lida Victoria Coxe as your hostess.  As the only daughter of the locally legendary and spirited Coxe clan, she has served as the lady of the house since the death of her mother shortly before the home's completion.  She divides her time between this beautiful mansion and the family's main home on the plantation in the county.
